AbstractThe museological inventory is a space of cultural and heritage democratization and a place of production of knowledge especially in view of the double dimension of our heritage and the essential role played by the different actors in the contemporary heritage dynamics. The interrelationship between the material and immaterial character of heritage and the studies based on this interrelationdhip, carried out from the museological point of view-such as the one of the inventory- enable us to give the museum a voice to rebuild, on the basis of specific strategies of participation, texts through which answers may be found as well as areas of reflection and meeting places created to make the museum socially useful. Taking as a starting point a group of interviews to professionals of 11 Portuguese museums between 2008 and 2010 on the nature of the inventory, we present the first reflections about the professional profile of whoever is in charge of that museological function, as well as his knowledge, experiences, expectations and working methods. Moreover, through the study and interpretation of the answers obtained for the first question, we venture into the imaginarium of these professionals to decode not only the lines of action that guide this vital function of the museum, but also the different echoes they produce during their everyday cultural management. Among the conclusions, we highlight the weak presence of the immaterial dimension of heritage properties in the mind of whom, starting from the inventory and through field work and research, creates the knowledge associated to our heritage reality, as well as the different consequences this situation produces in the survey, the conservation and the spread of the social memory of the human groups. Key words: Immaterial cultural heritage. Inventory. Social construction. Social actors. Museum. Area. Memory. UNESCO.
