AbstractThe rules for student assessment introduced in recent years by the Bologna Process in Portugal led to the gradual reintroduction of attendance evaluation, which increased the interest of its sociological study and raised the question of its classist nature. If both the relationships that social class, and the relationships that regular attendance to lectures establish with academic merit, are well known to sociologists, there is still poor understanding on the relationship between attendance and social class, as well as of the magnitude of the elasticity that the effects of attendance on academic merit have in specific social situations. This study suggests that the amplitude of positive effects brought about by stimulating attendance in Portuguese Higher Education and the social distinction of students are negatively correlated, contrarily to what one might anticipate.
