#Abstract
This paper discusses the complementarities and setbacks regarding the invention of Mouraria quarter, in Lisbon. The focus is on the attempts to (re) invent the neighborhood, by proposing technical and urban interventions that plaster urban identity and symbols, especially enhanced through the idea of 'plural' and 'cultural' city. It also explores the hypothesis that the ambiguity and ambivalence, as the interconnections between the processes of emblematic and territorial stigmatization, are central to the interpretation of the 'polyphonic' reality of this particular neighborhood.
