#Abstract
This article examines regimes of interethnic coexistence in Brazil and Germany taking into account three analytical levels: discourses, regulatory framework and daily life. Beyond all existing differences between these two countries, the article states that current regimes of coexistence in both cases have recently undergone a crisis of legitimacy. In Brazil, the appraisal of a mestizo nation, which is allegedly harmonic and egalitarian, contrasts with a profusion of ethnic movements claiming publicly for justice and equity. In Germany, the romantic ideal of a predestined nation defined by ancestral ties still persists. This construction contrasts with a society characterised by huge cultural pluralism and ethnic heterogeneity.
