AbstractThe text here presented gets back to the guidelines of some of the reflections derived from a research that was carried through a selected group of young graduates in Engineering. Here we intend to: i) highlight some of the processes of change related with the patterns of professional insertion of young graduates; ii) identify the factors underlying the segmentation of the professional markets and its effects on the increasing internal differentiation of this professional group and its effects on the criteria of identity classification and distinction mobilized by the youth in the beginning of a career; iii) contribute for the knowledge on the changes occurring on the representations and the meanings constructed around the diploma, the job and the profession.
