#Abstract
This paper aims at introducing the sanctuary’s history, since 1427, when the future King, D. Duarte, started to protect a small chapel buil by shepherds, after the hierophany of a miraculous Virgin’s image. We are going to follow the evolution of the sacred place, that is, to trace the material conditions – such as donations, buildings – which enabled its religious intencionality. This work is divided in two parts: one based on writen documents, and the other concerning the must recent local archaeological excavations.
