A imagem do judeu no Auto da Ressurreição no Cancioneiro de Francisco Costa (1583)
James Nelson Novoa
File (.pdf)
AbstractThe Auto da Ressurreição, by Francisco da Costa, is a play presumably performed in Marrakech in 1583 whose main character is a Jew, a particularity when considering that some of its spectators were, in all like-lihood, Iberian-born Jews. The play was written by the Portuguese Ambassador to Morocco following the Por-tuguese defeat at the Battle of Alcacer Quibir, when he was charged with the responsibility of negotiating the release of captives and inhabitants from the Jewish quarter of the imperial city. Although the text is clearly proselytic and aims to convert Jews to Christianity, it stands apart from the array of anti-Semitic texts that are so characteristic of the medieval Iberian literary tradition. This article aims thus to analyse the possibility that Francisco da Costa’s personal exile in Morocco could have contributed to the development of a new sensibi-lity with regard to Jews.
