Notes on Three Prayers in Late 15th-Century Portuguese (the Oração da Empardeada, the Oração de S. Leão, Papa, and the Justo Juiz) : text history and inquisitorial interdictions
Arthur L-F. Askins
File (.pdf)
AbstractThree prayers included in the Portuguese Livro de Horas published in Paris in 1500 were later proscribed in the Index lists published in both Portugal and Spain the mid-16th century. The article discusses the medieval sources of the three prior to their prohibition, the apparent reasons for it, and their later survivals despite it. Particular attention is given to the Oração da Empardeada, or, as it is widely known throughout Europe, the Quindecim Orationes or The Fifteen O’s, falsely attributed to St Bridget of Sweden. The prayer and the legend that normally accompanied it are traced back to the early fourteenth century and traced forward to printings done as late as 2003. A transcription of the text, as it appears in the Paris 1500 printing, is provided.
