#Abstract
This article explores a number of aspects in Francisco Martínez’s grammar which reveal the influence of the well-known descriptive and normative theory he supported. The importance of this study resides in the fact that the grammatical theories of this Portuguese grammarian were introduced at Salamanca as ‘progressive’ and ‘innovative’, similarly to his fellow grammarian from Estremadura, F. Sánchez de las Brozas. Nevertheless, the ‘progressive’ aspects of Martinez’s theories were quite distinctive and come closer to Nebrija’s line of thought.
