#Abstract
In 1878, the Portuguese writer Manuel Pinheiro Chagas wrote A mantilha de Beatriz, a novelised adaptation of Calderón de la Barca’s comedy Antes que todo es mi dama. This article describes how the play was received since its first performance, and attempts to determine the reasons why the Portuguese author chose to adapt it and even include Calderón as a fictional character. Thus, a comparative study is made of both works that concludes by tracing this text’s trajectory in the 20th century.
