AbstractMauricio Jalón, The ‘order of sciences’ in the 16th century and the Plaza Universal The change in the order of sciences between the 16th and 17th centuries is a capital problem in our transmission of knowledge. The medieval encyclopaedism vanishes due to the Renaissance spirit, and, by way of compensation, miscellaneous, qualifying and panoptic books proliferate during the late Cinquecento. Th e Plaza universal de todas ciencias y artes, published by Suárez de Figueroa in 1615, allow us to re?ect on these exceptional circumstances. Thanks to its wide-spread di? usion, this document eloquently expresses a certain scienti? c and technical culture, which went beyond the basics, possessed by the Spanish reader of the time.
