File (.pdf)
AbstractAna Martínez Pereira, The participation of Portugal in the Spanish War of Succession. A political diatribe in emblems, symbols and enigmas. When Carlos II died without progeny, the Europe of the 1700 had to side either with the French faction (Felipe de Anjou) or the Austrian one (Archduke Carlos). The ambiguity of Portugal in the Spanish succession con?ict ended when the war against Spain and France started in 1704. This confrontation is reported in a curious manuscript housed in the Biblioteca Universitária de Coimbra. By means of enigmas and emblems, it develops a patriotic discourse that shows Spain as a puppet controlled by the demonised France. The direct, aggressive and personalised political criticism makes of this work a singular example of political emblematic literature. KEY WORDS: POLITICAL EMBLEMATIC LITERATURE ? PORTUGAL
