Resume
As subtis linhas da humana dissimulação
Isabel Almeida
File (.pdf)
AbstractD. Francisco Manuel de Melo’s Tácito Português. Vida e morte, ditos e feitos de D. João IV is an unfinished work that raises a number of questions. Considering the controversial aspect of the model clearly referred to in the title (Tacitus), this study attempts to establish a relationship between this work and other examples of Tacitism (namely El Tácito Español, by Baltasar Álamos de Barrientos, and Le Tacite françois, by René de Ceriziers), concluding that D. Francisco’s choices, particularly the emphasis given to the similitudo temporum, constitute strong evidence of the dysphoria that characterizes the Life of […]. D. João IV. In line with Margarida Vieira Mendes, this study advocates that this baroque text has to be analysed in light of the specific circumstance that distinguish it.
