#Abstract
This article has a dual aim: firstly, to present some of the most relevant textual features of the Cartas Familiares (1664), by Francisco Manuel de Melo, focusing on their relation to Baroque aesthetics and poetics; secondly, to detect the motives that may have contributed to the favourable reception of this work by 17th century readers, as well as by present-day readers and critics.
