AbstractSaint Augustine's theory of passions, developed in Books IX and XIV of De civitate Dei, is considered the beginning of the medieval history of passions. In a first stage, this paper analysis the pages where St. Augustine states that passions are indispensable instruments for salvation, diverging from the concepts supported by pagan philosophical schools. Secondly, it examines his influence in medieval morals, and in the pastoral and mystical theological reflections on the passions.
