#Abstract
In several countries, active school transport and independent mobility in children and youth has diminished in the past two decades. Parents are the main decision makers regarding the modal option of home to school travel in children, or at least they exert a great influence in the youth’s modal choices. Many of the behaviours are transmitted from parents to children, who become increasingly more dependent on car use. The consequences of these processes, if not unavoidable, are very difficult to correct in the future of sustainable mobility in cities. It becomes necessary to identify and analyse the factors that have influenced this behaviour changes in the choice of transport mode, promoting political and practical alternatives. Following the research works on these subjects, we try to make a reflection based on the national and international literature on children and youth mobility, particularly focusing on home to school travel.
