Erosão hídrica em solos florestais : estudo em povoamentos de Pinus pinaster e Eucalyptus globulus em Macieira de Alcôba
Carmen Ferreira
File (.pdf)
AbstractIn Portugal and namely in Macieira de Alcôba - located in the foothills of the granite Caramulo mountains in the Agueda municipality - the new pat-terns of forest land use no longer reflect the image of the traditional forest, being, nowadays, the result of multiple decisions that arise as a direct conse-quence of forest fires. Thus, there has been an increasing trend in the replace-ment of the original pine forest - Pinus pinaster - by fast growing species like eucalyptus -Eucalyptus globulus . As a result of the portuguese farmers preference for eucalyptus, the main objective of the present study is to assess the impact of this species on soil erosion, discussing the effects monitored during the various growing stages and comparing them with the data obtained for the pine forest. The experimental design and the methodologies used were designed in order to depict the main factors involved in the soil erosion process, as well as making a contribution to the understanding of the process itself, considered as one of the most important factors on recent hillslope evolution. The results of overland flow and soil losses are presented and discussed. The overland flow values are analised in terms of the amount of rainfall obtained in each sampling period and of the soil infiltration capacity in the slopes where erosion plots were installed. The soil loss values obained in both forest land use types are presented and a comparison is made between the dif-ferent methodologies used for their quantification, that is, the results of the erosion stakes, the wash traps and the bounded plots. A final comparison is made between our results and those presented by other soil erosion research projects developed in Portugal. Finally, a variety of approaches to soil conser-vation are presented in order to promote a sustainable forest management.
