#Abstract
The great changes the agricultural sector has gone through over these last years constitute the main cause for the difficulties of rural communities. Today the need for a strategy of encouragement to help rural communities face the more and more complex challenges ahead is clear. The dynamics of rural areas are complex and present high potentialities. The areas corresponding to the two hydro-agricultural undertakings analysed (Gostei and Azibo) are a good example of that. We defend a diversity of activities complementing agriculture, always taking into account the need to preserve all the characteristics of each area. What we envisage is a sustained development, which will create quality of life without harming the social, cultural and environmental potentialities of the region. In our opinion there is still a long way to go. However, the starting point offers potentialities important to preserve, from little changed ecosystems to a very peculiar social and cultural identity. If that happens, the rural world will become an essential element for a much more balanced and sustained disposition of the territory, through which some harmony with the natural environment will be kept.
