AbstractThe growth of Leixões allows us to put into context and chart the urban coastlinegrowth of Leça. It substantiates the theory that transport access is the organizing and transforming factor of a given geographical region. It marks the rise in popularity of bathing and beach enjoyment, and conversely may also contribute towards its decline. In Leixões, the bathing was relocated to the Atlantic beach of Fuzelhas and Leça and revealed itself as an urban beach-going and romantic setting, which was frequented by the English and artists. Meanwhile, its urban front progressed/stabilized along the road, Herois de Africa, perpendicular to the sea, where in 1952 the tram turned around at the end of its line. Afterwards, with the establishment of dock 2, the tram was to disappear. With the movable bridge, the presence of roads resulted in the predominance of travel by car and bus, with the beach-goer now making the journey between the beach and home on daily basis, and visiting beaches even further a field.
