#Abstract
The author edits an unpublished sonnet by the Brasilian poet Inácio José de Alvarenga Peixoto (1744-1792), allusive to the construction of the Vila Rica gaol, which was initiated in 1784 by the Governor Cunha Meneses. The article goes on to establish some similarities with an analysis of the theme in a work of the same period: Tomás António Gonzaga's Cartas Chilenas.
