#Abstract
Little is known of the life of Goncalo Fernandes Trancoso. However, his Contos e História de Proveito e Exemplo were so successful (particulary in the 17th century) that they included a Breve Recompliacam da Doutrina dos Mistérios mais importantes da nossa Fe (since the 1646 edition) and, from 1681 onwards, the Policia e Urbanidade Cristã; in other words, they were not only a catechism but also a book on good manners.
