#Abstract
This article attempts to analyse a sequence of the text of the 16th century Portuguese novella 'Menina e moça', by Bernardim Ribeiro. Attention is called to the rhetorical precept which, at the beginning of the work, points to the different nature which the narrative of sentiments imposes, taking account of the courtly theme of amorous suffering and the narrative prose tradition, which has a chivalrous basis; the author also suggests (in keeping with other recent studies) that it is necessary to interpret this work within the framework of the affirmation of narrative prose in the 16"1 century.
