#Abstract
This article describes the commentaries which were published in Portuguese in the 17* century on De institutione grammatica libri (Lisbon, 1572) by Father Manuel Álvares, S.J., and analyses the causes which led Jesuit teachers like Bartolomeu Rodrigues Chorro, João Nunes Freire, José Soares and António Franco to write compendia which translate and explain precepts and comments by Álvares.
