File (.pdf)
AbstractThis text begins with a brief exposition, in a historical perspective, about the evolution of the professional education in Portugal, in the area of Documentation and Information, since the creation of the Curso de Bibliotecário-Arquivista, in 1887, until its closure in 1982, when it has been replaced by the Curso de Especialização em Ciências Documentais (CECD). After that, it is analysed the CECD, a two years post-graduated course, with a first year common to all students and a second year divided into two “options” (Archives and Library / Documentation), that constitutes the indispensable requirement to occupy the places of Técnico Superior de Arquivo and Técnico Superior de Biblioteca / Docu-mentação in the public administration’s institutions. A new education model, that appeared in 2001, at under graduated level, in the University of Porto, is also approached, because it constitutes an innovative proposal in the scope of Information Science, oriented to educate information professionals able to act in any organizational context. This new course is characterized in detail, because it goes straight forward to the renovation of high academic studies, implemented after the Bologna Declaration. A quick view over other courses with less expression is also given. At the end, the Portuguese market place for the area of Documentation and Information is characterized, taking into account qualitative indicators, because there are no rigorous and quantitative studies about the employment of information professionals, trained inside the various courses that exist in Portugal, along the last two decades.
