Caroline Fracalossi, Maria da Conceição Ramos
Documento (.pdf)
AbstractConsidering the context of a world that each day gets more globalized and borderless, the study of international migration has acquired great importance and deserved attention by the international community. Within the scope of this extensive theme, the present study has intended to verify what are the influencing factors for the increasing mobility of qualified young Portuguese workers to Brazil, after 2008, aiming to identify the main causes of this increase, linked with the individual motivations of these emigrants. Thus, from those main causes, eight categories have been established, four related to economical factors and four more not necessarily connected with economic factors. In this sense, to do so, the qualitative method was used, through semi-structured intensive interviews applied to ten Portuguese emigrants, young graduates, whose emigration took place after 2008, considering Portugal as the origin country and Brazil as the destination. The present investigation has highlighted the important role that not strictly economic factors perform in deciding to migrate abroad, when compared to traditional economic factors. Next are the main influencing factors highlighted by the interviewees: personal interest in growing, professional advancement and future acceptance of international experience; economic issues linked with the lack of prospects and opportunities in Portugal; Brazil’s economic growth and development; networking, the language issue and Brazil’s climate; issues connected with the labour market in both countries.
