AbstractThe socio-economic crisis felt throughout Europe, including Portugal, assumes an expression of concern when it comes to health. There are several strands affected, with special emphasis on people's mental health, community health and child health. Children, as one of the most vulnerable groups suffer directly or indirectly with this new situation, being forced to make major changes in their life, many of them felt as punishment. Take as an example the reduction of economic resources that causes a change in family dynamics, implying a change of school of children, a departure from colleagues and friends, a decrease in extra-curricular activities. Besides this aspect, others such as food, sleep, health monitoring and anticipatory care are affected. New priorities are established making health a well dispensable, that is only valued in the context of disease. Health professionals have a greater responsibility to detect situations that endanger the health of the child looking for solutions together with family, emphasizing the link with the existing resources in the community to define valid alternatives to overcome the obstacles posed by the crisis. The aim is to identify the impact of the crisis on children's health, analyzing real situations that occur in pediatric services and which are a result of the current economic and social changes. Situations are identified that affect the health of children with chronic disease, arising from the crisis. In Portugal there is no continuous monitoring system of the effects of the crisis on the health of the Portuguese. This article is based on a review of the latest literature on this subject, complemented by the analysis of situations and discourse analysis of different health professionals working in the field of pediatrics. The results are in line with the reports made in Portugal by checking the effects of the crisis at the level of vulnerable groups such as children, affecting aspects such as food, mental health and access health care.
