#Abstract
The investigative work outlined here, carried out under the theme of "Culture and its audiences: Panóias - a case study", was only possible in a site made culturally rich by a historical legacy of extreme value, such as the Panóias Sanctuary in Vila Real, where, during several years, information about the visitors' profile and their level of satisfaction with regards to the Monument was gathered. The main objectives of this study were to characterize the public that visited the Sanctuary between 1996 and 1999 and between 2006 and 2011 and to listen to their opinions and suggestions for improvement. To achieve these objectives we set up three instruments of investigation: Survey questionnaire; Survey interview; Direct observation chart. This investigation was developed through quantitative and qualitative analysis and the combination of data has been fundamental throughout this process. Taking into account the objective of the investigation, we concluded that the majority of the public visiting the Panóias Sanctuary, in the period analysed, was what Lopes (2004:45) named in his work as 'Habitual'. Thus, analogous to what Lopes (2004:46) refers to in his studies, the public at the Panóias Sanctuary was characterised as holding high academic qualifications, graduate jobs and an already rooted and intrinsic great cultural wealth.
