AbstractIn this paper we present a diagnosis of temperature on Metropolitan Area of Rio de Janeiro (MARJ) through remote sensing between 1984 and 2010 from the Landsat sensor. We worked with the land surface temperature (LST) for the monitoring of heat island. The MARJ has its nature of heat island "polynuclear", that is with several heat nucleus distributed in the metropolitan space setting a "metropolitan heat island". These nucleus are concentrated in major roads in obsolete or degraded areas of the port area and the suburbs. The milder areas named freshness islands were located near the coastal massifs with forest, in the vicinity of coastal ponds and city parks. Thus, the spaces of greater comfort with a predominance freshness island are located in the areas of better urban infrastructure with a "cleaner" urban construction material and in proximity to the amenities of the "green" (parks and forests) and the "blue "(the sea and the lagoon); while the areas of greater discomfort, where predominates heat island are situated in areas with poor urban infrastructure with inferior quality urban material and absent or distant from the amenities of nature, constituting unhealthy spaces. Because of the major events on the way, it is expected that the conditions of urban infrastructure and environmental conditions become more just, providing better thermal comfort situations especially in more segregated spaces.
