AbstractThe widespread access to information provides a broad portfolio but "dangerous" to the students. The speed and amount of information obtained becomes important to disentangle the published scientific information clarifying the importance it plays in the built knowledge of the student and the implications for the process of teaching and learning. The pupils’ conceptual background when entering the classroom made us develop a study about their previous ideas in order to understand and assess that contribution for the development of the conceptual and inferential geographical learning of the pupils. Taking into account the nature of the investigation, we conceived a questionnaire to be implemented in different moments. The data analysis was developed using an inductive approach inspired in the Grounded Theory. In line with the results, we admit that the knowledge geographical construction rarely involves a total abandonment of a previous concept for another. Instead, often the change involves addition of new concepts and the retention of the existing ones, within a framework of a more complex understanding. We must look, therefore, to something more that the substantive concepts of the pupils, namely the context where they are developed and the “concrete” that links them.
