AbstractThe methodology in urban climate gathers methods for the mapping, analysis and mitigation of the heat island. The first and oldest one brings together the analyzes of time series from meteorological stations as important indicators to the study of the urban climate, pointing out patterns and trends. The second one is urban remote sensing based on distance imaging and its wide spatial coverage, which allows the quantification of the change in the environment over time, impossible only with the records of the meteorological stations. The third one is numerical modeling, which with simulations contributes to the understanding of the atmosphere at its lower levels in the layers closer to the surface, resulting in intra-urban heat flows. This paper presents the three methods of urban climate analysis adopted for the city of Rio de Janeiro and analyzes its results. The analysis of time series evidenced the rise of the temperature curve from the 1950s onwards, defining in the last three decades a warmer scenario. Remote sensing pointed to the hottest spaces in the city, determining and quantifying the core of the heat island. The meteorological modeling reinforced and compared the temperature mapping performed with remote sensing. The methods together complement and enhance the study of the urban climate and the heat island in the city of Rio de Janeiro.
