Documento (.pdf)
AbstractAs it happens in many tourist destinations, also in Portugal tourism is one of the most important sectors for the economy, being considered strategic. But in an era of unstable and unpredictable times, it is urgent to look at the territory, particularly the low-density ones, in a perspective of preserving the landscapes and heritage in its multiple aspects, creating opportunities and dynamics of sustainable tourism. The endogenous resources that are decisive in the development of a region are incorporated into new forms of tourism that provide experiences that correspond to the new tourist’s motivations. Wine tourism, which has expanded very consistently, has become an important pillar for the sustainability of many territories, being interesting for both, hosts and visitors. Tourism, especially Wine Tourism, has been identified as one of the most effective ways to promote the socioeconomic development of the Douro Demarcated Region, being considered a priority. But, after being classified as a World Heritage Site in 2001, with responsibilities for the preservation of classified assets, it is important to understand how the destination is being managed and the development impact in the territory. The main objective of this study is to analyse wine tourism as an important component of the management of World Heritage sites, its contribution to the development of the territory and the association with the notoriety of destination.
