Abstract“Home / homeland is not, where you are born, but where you feel good and where you can live in freedom.”; “Language is the key to culture and we have to learn to get along with other cultures.” These and other statements were collected by this author throughout a C1 Level German course at Georg-August-University Göttingen, where I questioned international students about their concept of ‘home‘. These statements highlight how young people from all over the world position themselves with regard to cultural identity and interculturalism. (cf. Herman, Schachner & Noack, 2012) These utterances occured spontaneaously in the classroom or were initiated by course material (Papadimitriou & Rosebrock, 2014) and themes and they can build an important part of class conversation. This article outlines the theroretical background of intercultural citizenship and gives an insight in didactic approaches to the construction and deconstruction of (inter)cultural identity, especially in the discussion of literature (Rupp, 2009).
