AbstractThe Peregrinação is a work by Fernão Mendes Pinto, first published in Lisbon in 1614, about 31 years after the death of its author. A work of unquestionable complexity highlights the author's effort to make his contemporaries and countrymen understand a distant reality, in a way that it does not confront the established powers, expectations of an imperial representation and the Portuguese existence in the East, built from early 1500 and in phase of deep challenges. In contexts of often improvised cultural encounters, Fernão Mendes Pinto records what he sees, and he seeks to interpret it. The author insists on the testimonial character of what is reported, and thus personal experience is presented as a guarantee of truth of the facts offered. At the same time, through his observations, he reveals an image of the Portuguese in the East, through statements made by himself, or by using the voice of other, questioning the intentions of Portuguese policies and agents in the East. Peregrinação is an unavoidable testimony of the individual and collective vulnerabilities of the Portuguese project in the East. The need of the other, and the need to cooperate, and to make alliances with the other (in a world in which the Portuguese are just one more among many other entities in dialogue or in confrontation), encourage practices that deserve even nowadays our attention.
