Crônica de um médico de Goa : os contos de Ananta Rau Sar Dessai
Hélder Garmes
Documento (.pdf)
AbstractWriter Ananta Rau Sar Dessai was born in 1910 and published his stories in the Goa periodic press in the mid-twentieth century, and has composed several radio plays broadcast by the former Goa Broadcaster. Physician by profession, he worked in the village of Mardol, located in the Taluka de Pondá, region of the so-called Old Colonies, that is, areas that the Portuguese occupied only in the second half of the eighteenth century. The present work intends to focus the writer's tales, keeping in the horizon of analysis his radio plays, in order to demonstrate how his texts give literary form to a kind of chronicle of Goan life of that region in a very troubled period for the local population. This is when the Indian Union, in British India, gained strength and promoted the independence of the country, just as Portuguese colonial domination gained salazarist contours, with consequent movements of resistance to colonialism in Goa and, at the moment after the end of Portuguese colonialism, a the writer's critical repositioning leaves his reader somewhat dumbfounded.
