#Abstract
Drawing upon a doctoral research project being developed at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto, this brief essay expounds on the complexity of the teaching and educational context in the council of Vila Nova de Gaia between the late 19th and the early 20th centuries. It focuses on outlining this municipality’s educational profile and its organisational dynamics through the geographic charting of schooling and the pinpointing of outstanding individualities as educational agents. Following preliminary research findings, we pay close attention to educational philanthropy and the influence of republican ideology in schooling and instruction in Vila Nova de Gaia during the time period under consideration.
