#Abstract
Located in Valadares near the seaside, the Sanatório Marítimo do Norte was a healthcare institution (1917-1974) which aimed to cure children diagnosed with bone tuberculosis whilst simultaneously providing them with literacy and leisure activities. This paper analyses the genesis of the sanatorium building in its relationship with the light therapy methods and pedagogical concepts employed in the rehabilitation and education of younger patients. Through a wide range of sources (the sanatorium’s newspaper “O Girassol” (1924-1955), mainstream printed press, oral testimonies, correspondence, etc.), we are able to characterise this educational project based on a “school in the sun” model – the latter idealised by Joaquim Gomes Ferreira Alves, founder of the institution, with inspiration from ideas of Auguste Rollier and others – as well as outline the formal and informal education process employed in tracking the sanatorium’s inmates subsequent social and professional reintegration.
