#Abstract
Crucial processes like enrolling in Primary School, learning the first letters, numbers and myths leave an indelible mark that is carried into adulthood, even much more than family, religion or citizenship influences. Various studies about Portuguese primary school education during the Estado Novo dictatorial regime emphasised its focus on spreading mediocre and castrating values about knowing and changing reality and the world. Considering both rural and urban Vila Nova de Gaia, we comparatively assess two literary testimonies about the primary school of that era: those of teachers and writers Afonso Ribeiro and J. Rentes de Carvalho. Beyond their literary merits, such accounts represent compelling historical sources as they illuminate the autobiographical educational experiences of both authors in different phases of the 20th century.
