#Abstract
The standpoint of women´s studies, history of education and art history emphasises and benefits from the gender perspective, which allows us to understand the relationship between education, social practices and cultural representations of women. The artistic education popularised in the 19th century by the bourgeoisie highlights the determinism of a socio-educational context that promoted learning of Fine Arts and framed the public visibility of artistic production developing outside academic teaching. This study presents the personal journey of the Costa Gomes and Rocha Leão sisters, of Maria da Glória da Fonseca Vasconcelos, and Rita Ricardina da Costa, somehow forgotten Vila Nova de Gaia individualities who illuminate the process of social construction of women artists.
