#Abstract
This essay aims to survey public instruction initiatives undertaken between the late 19th and early 20th centuries by advocates of the working class in Vila Nova de Gaia around this specific educational segment. This assessment emerges from an MA dissertation in which we examined the role that the education of the underprivileged played during the period under consideration, namely being viewed as ‘soul’s sustenance’ and true path for social emancipation. Within this framework, our analysis identifies the most significant institutions and educational initiatives aimed at the working classes of this municipality.
