AbstractThe areas around Cachão da Valeira in the Douro and Pico Island have characteristics and specificities that conditioned the establishment and installation of wine production units in these specific geomorphological areas of Portugal. In the Alto Douro, Valeira’s hamlet, a granite formation that represented until the end of the 18th century a natural obstacle to navigability upstream of the river Douro, conditioned the affirmation and protection of wine culture in that area. Another impediment, of a historical and social nature, which was blocking the expansion of the vineyard in this area, to the Spanish border, was the non-legalization of the exportation of the wines produced there, which influenced, until the middle of the nineteenth century, the most widespread installation of units of wine production and in the investments of a wealthy bourgeoisie that tried to enrich with the business of the generous wines that brought him lucrative dividends. In Pico, the volcanic and stony relief did not prevent human action aimed at obtaining a liqueur wine and another for consumption, similar to what happened in Alto Douro. The slopes represented by the climate, rainfall and relief did not stop the development of this winemaking culture in the two regions. This is the topic of analysis that we propose for reflection in this work, trying to equate a different forecast for the development of vitiviniculture, even if the relief accidents in these two areas were overdue, the quality of the wines produced there had not been recognized and if they had not been sought on the basis of the business provided.
