AbstractA theoretical-methodological approach is applied to Comparative History and to the Comparative Method in History in its constitution, main uses, problems and contributions. A brief history of this discipline, an intradisciplinary field, is drawn from Marc Bloch, founder of the School of Annales, who laid the foundations for the more systematic formulation of comparative problematizing history and comparative method as part of the historian’s office, to the recent perspective of «Compare the incomparable» proposed by Marcel Devienne. Considering also that «all history is comparative history»2, it is emphasized that Comparative History is original more by its elaboration than by its results and consists, in general, of the possibility of systematically examining itself as a The same problem crosses different historical-social realities. With the aim of exposing and explaining problems and presenting promising heuristic procedures such as analogy and association, it uses approaches or oppositions, highlighting common traits or insisting on differences as diverse solutions to a common problem. In turn, the comparative method in history allows us to think important questions in different contexts through multi-focal plurals and various scales of observation and analysis. It is therefore important to explore these potentialities in the construction of objects and research projects on different historical realities, despite the criticisms and uncertainties with which it still faces, especially regarding the problem of comparative spatio-temporal units. It is then reflected on «what can be compared» and «how to compare», founding and relevant issues for the collective exercise of comparative experimentation on contiguous themes and significant interrelationships. In this conceptual framework, a proposal for a comparative analysis of the Upper Douro and Pico Island, World Heritage Cultural Landscapes (UNESCO) is outlined.
