AbstractIf Pico Island, to the eyes of those who look at it, can be distinguished itself in the archipelago by the telluric force of its youth, by the majesty and splendor of its presence, it was also the one that, due to its recent geological constitution, more difficulty offered to people settlement, particularly in the western zone, covered by large lava fields. But it was precisely in these petrified lava fields, whose owners were in large part, the rich families and religious organizations established in Faial, represented in Pico by a person of their trust, that Pico´s man hands, built a unique architectural model of stone walls, forming currais and other structures, with very well defined goals, where the culture of the vineyard, already tried with success in the Southern part of the island, would eventually avenge and flourish, giving origin to the longest economic cycle of Pico’s History. The wine produced there, – Verdelho – started increasingly every day. It was one of high quality, and exported in large quantities, when in the mid-nineteenth, the plagues of oidium and phylloxera dramatically affect the vineyard. Suddenly everything changed. From thousands of kites it started to be only hundreds. The landowners, suddenly ruined, started selling it almost for free, being acquired by the ancient foremen and former workers of the vineyard who, in the search for solutions, and winery quality, would eventually became in the followers of that culture, turning it into what it is today. If the history of Pico´s vine went through several crises and deep changes, since emigration and abandonment, the work done in stone survived to all storms, volcanoes and earthquakes. Remained the architectural model, harmoniously built, stone by stone, by the hands of man, in an effort and persistence worthy of praise, where the landscape of Pico vineyard, inheritance of unparalleled value, recognized and distinguished precisely by the UNESCO as World Heritage.
