AbstractThe sleep hammock is a type of hanging bed whose knowledge is part of the indigenous cultural heritage in Brazil. Originally these artifacts were made by weaving vegetal fibers as palm trees and cotton and were rectangular shaped objects. The Brazilian historiography also registers that the Portuguese wives were responsible for adapting the indigenous weaving technology by replacing the palm trees fibers by cotton fibers and introduced the macramé hangings (varandas) in the hammocks sides and decorative fringes as well. In Mato Grosso State the art still resists in several communities placed around Cuiabá River valley in Mato Grosso State. However, this practice is more intensive in some communities located in the rural area of Varzea Grande municipality due to their extraordinary artistic beauty. This research aims to map the communities where hammocks artisans are still resisting and commercialization.
