#Modos de Fazer da «Antropologia Colonial» : a Missão Científica de Mendes Correia à Guiné Portuguesa (1945-1946)

#Abstract
Between 1945 and 1946, Mendes Correia, the principal mentor of the Porto School of Anthropology, was then in Portuguese Guinea accompanied by his assistant Amílcar de Magalhães Mateus to prepare an anthropological mission. The script denotes Mendes Correia’s scientific interests and the way he sought to produce knowledge — establishing a network of contacts between international scientists and local informants. Such modus operandi, present in other colonizing countries, provides us with material to reflect how anthropology was articulated with the Portuguese colonial project, namely through the creation of scientific missions. This visit also allowed to demystify some preconceived ideas of Mendes Correia, namely those regarding racial classification, and raised the need to develop new fields of study, such as native languages and numbering systems.
