#Abstract
Drawing on perspectives in urban anthropology and debates on development and poverty, and building on a longitudinal case study, this article aims to reflect, in epistemological and methodological terms, on the virtues and limitations of the role of ethnographer, when, beyond seeking to understand the context and research question from an external and academic viewpoint, he or she decides to become part of the process being studied, involving him or herself emotionally, politically and in terms of personal responsibility with the co-subjects of study, committed to participating side-by-side with them until the end of that process. This approach is fundamental to diagnosis of the principal problems of places destined to pass through profound urban interventions, and for the formulation of urban planning policies that are more sensitive and appropriate to the needs of each city.
