#Abstract
An anthropological body research has a very particular scientific history in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The construction of a science of the body, beyond the search for the object, reflects the world of ideas and the great fears of Western society. The 100th anniversary celebration of the Anthropology and Ethnology Portuguese Society (SPAE) is an opportunity for the research on epistemological and ideological processes related to the study of the body, the first object of interest in Portuguese anthropology, in its early days. Shall the body be the subject the «new» anthropological field to highlight the relevance of anthropology in contemporary times? The specific case of the recent emergence of anthropology of health, overcoming a long tradition of physical and medical anthropology, is the opportunity to think the «ambiguity » of the body as a reference for the exercise of anthropology through an anthropology of fragility.
