AbstractThe term Atlantic Rock Art is used to describe prehistoric rock carvings which are common to the landscapes of Western Europe. The repetition of a number of characteristics, from imagery to landscape location, suggests the existence of contacts between societies which were separated by large water bodies. This paper summarizes the results of a study about Atlantic Art, in which an innovative multi-disciplinary and multi-scalar methodology was applied to an empirical database, recorded in 5 countries. The analysis and scrutiny of the motifs, compositions, carving techniques and other variables enabled new interpretations about the nature of this rock art and active agents of cultural transmission and connectivity which enabled its widespread.
