Modos de Fazer «Santos» : a Escrita de «Vidas» de Varões e Mulheres «Ilustres em Virtude» em Portugal (Séculos XVII-XVIII)
Paula Almeida Mendes
Documento (.pdf)
AbstractIn Portugal, the period between the second half of the XVIth century and the first half of the XVIIIth century was the scene of a very significant production and edition of «Lives» of Portuguese men and women who were «illustrious in virtue», whose immediate objectives of glorification of the person in question, ad maiorem gloriam Dei, and spiritual edification — and in so many cases as an instrument of support for procedures with a view to the beatification or canonization of this «exceptional Christian», who died in fama sanctitatis — can not, of course, be dissociated neither from the offensive of disciplining, accentuated in the framework of the Counter Reformation, and the construction of a history of «territorial holiness». Against this backdrop, this communication proposal seeks to draw attention to the ways in which the authors of «Lives» of men and women «illustrious in virtue» have developed a strategy, in the sense of memory fixation and promoting and sustaining the fama sanctitatis of some of these figures (Father João Cardim (S. J.), Afonso Sanches and his wife, Teresa Martins, Margarida de Chaves). In this context, the increasing inclusion of these men and women printed portraits, which have often become instruments of devotion, must also be emphasized, as they formulate «visual models» that appeal to religious sensibility and the ways in which they complement each other in the sense that, in many cases, these works become a support for the beatification or canonization process.
