AbstractMultifunctionality is a reality in Ancien Regime’ societies. The surgeons who left Portugal in the 18th century to work in overseas territories, namely Brazil, did not always work only within the scope of the treatment of illnesses requiring surgery. In this presentation, we are going to talk about surgeons, mainly Portuguese surgeons, who were in Brazil pursuing socio-professional activities other than the practice of surgery. Some of them did made that by their own will, as it was the case with Ildefonso José da Costa Abreu, a surgeon who, in administrative proceedings sent to the Secretary of State of the Navy and the Overseas Territories, Martinho de Melo e Castro, who reported that had learned to whale and, for this reason, in addition to his work in the area of Surgery, he wanted to devote some of his time to whaling. In other cases, it happened because the circumstances raised the urgent need for practising other crafts or offices. Our research will resort mainly to the manuscripts kept at the Arquivo Histórico Ultramarino (AHU), formerly known as Conselho Ultramarino, which integrate the Projeto Resgate Barão do Rio Branco. From the theoretical point of view, we will focus on the assumptions put forward by Mary Lindemann, according to which an author who produced knowledge cannot be dissociated from the conditions in which it was formulated. The aim of this paper is to discuss the actions taken by those men in Brazil and how this allow us to identify different ways of making, learn, and impart knowledge that was beyond their main field of work. Therefore, the reasons and factors that play a role in this iteration and relation of the surgeons with others activities will be also addressed in this presentation. On the other hand, we will show how the process of learning other activities was based on day-to-day practice, on watching, listening to and working with someone who had that specific knowledge. Those elements are valuable to understand the context of the surgeons and Surgery in Brazil in the 18th century, as the technical skills of those surgeons are part of a complex process of improvement of different fields of knowledge into an intricate universe.
