#Abstract
Education is a fundamental strategy to empower the elderly so that they are able to overcome the process of marginalisation and the negative stereotypes that are socially imposed on them. The present article aims to analyse the results of the Open University’s Intergenerational Programme, from Universidade Estadual do Maranhão, as an institutional policy for the care of the elderly through education. The objective of the programme is to promote socio-educational activities that provide the opportunity for continued education, social inclusion and quality of life for the elderly, improving their knowledge and contributing to raising the levels of physical, mental and social health, in addition to bringing together and promoting interaction between the University and other generations. The programme addresses two central themes: literacy and continuing education. There have been significant results in the participants’ daily lives, in the cognitive, psychomotor, self-esteem and social aspects, among others.
